Putting our principles to the test: WR Ethical awarded the Good Egg mark

WR Ethical has been awarded the Good Egg mark by Good With Money, the independent guide to responsible finance.

We started WR Ethical in 2020 with a simple mission: mortgage advice that doesn’t cost the Earth, environmentally, emotionally or financially. Any business can describe itself as ethical. Independent assessment is how we check that the description holds up, and it gives our clients an outside view of whether we live up to what we say.

That is why the Good Egg mark matters to us. It sits alongside our B Corp and Fair Tax certifications, and this autumn it has been joined by two new SME News awards and annual confirmation of our VouchedFor Top Rated status (for the 6th year in a row). Each one looks at our business from a different angle.

What the Good Egg assessment involves

Good With Money awards the Good Egg mark to financial providers that benefit people and the planet while offering a fair deal. It looks at a company’s environmental, social and industry impact, taking into account its size, history and performance.

The assessment has two stages. First, Ethical Screening, an independent specialist consultancy, produces a report on the applicant. A panel of ethical finance experts then reviews that report before deciding whether to award the mark.

What the panel looked at

The screening report highlighted:

  • recommending that borrowers go directly to a lender where that is the lowest-cost option for them
  • whole-of-market advice, with clear, upfront fixed fees
  • free initial consultations and support for first-time buyers
  • charitable giving, tree planting and our commitment to Fair Tax
  • staff training and policies covering equality, business ethics and whistleblowing

Panellists also commented on the breadth of our commitments for a business of our size, our approach to green mortgages and the information we share with customers on our website.

You can read the full assessment on our Good Egg page.

Why it matters to Paul

“I’m delighted that WR Ethical has achieved Good Egg Certification. I’ve admired what the team at Good With Money has been doing since before we started WR Ethical, and to have our principles and practice pass their rigorous assessment is such a buzz.

“We try to do what’s right, but it can be hard to look outside your own niche and see if your approach stands up to proper scrutiny. This certification, along with our B Corp and Fair Tax certifications, confirms that it does.

“Each assessment process has looked at our business differently, so the collection of certifications is testament, in my view, to doing good being built in rather than trying to tick some boxes. It gives us confidence to continually improve and try to inspire others to do the same.”

More independent feedback

We see this year’s awards in the same light. At the SME News UK Finance Awards 2026, WR Ethical was named in two categories:

  • Most Trusted Mortgage Brokerage 2026, South West England
  • Ethical Business Excellence Award 2026, South West England

The Most Trusted category means the most to us, because trust can only come from the experience of the people we help. These follow three years as SME News Best Ethical Mortgage Broker, from 2023 to 2025.

Paul and Conor have also qualified for the VouchedFor 2027 Guide to Top Rated Financial Advisers, which is based on client reviews. Lorna and Darryl have recently signed up for the scheme too, and are expecting to meet the qualifying criteria before the end of the year. Every one of those reviews was written by someone who has been through the process with us, and we are grateful to each of them for taking the time.

What we are measured on

Our 2025/26 Impact Report sets out the commitments behind these assessments, and how we performed against them over the past year. We:

  • donated £15,406 to charity, 5% of our turnover, including at least £60 for every application fee
  • helped clients compare lenders’ ethical ratings alongside cost, using data from Ethical Consumer
  • measured our full carbon footprint and matched it through Ecologi, with emissions per team member down 16%
  • renewed our Fair Tax Mark for 2026/27
  • achieved accreditation as a certified B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet

The report also sets out where we want to improve next year, and each new assessment adds to that list.
